Back Pain Relief in Calgary
Back pain is one of the most common complaints we hear every day. Often it isn’t from lifting something heavy but rather moving the wrong way and flaring up the low back tissues. When the pain lingers without relief, it needs to be addressed.
Chronic back pain may occur in the upper back—from the base of the neck to the bottom of the ribs, or in the lower back—from the ribs to the pelvis. It’s the most common condition we treat in our clinic.
Diagnosing the Problem
Chiropractors have many tools to diagnose your issues. Dr. Les and Dr. Ford Davidson will ask questions about your injury history— most diagnosis can be made from the history. Most of the time tissues respond the same way. With disc issues, we look for pain while sitting or flexing forward; joint issues evidence pain with extension, like reaching your hands over the head; and muscular pain is usually in a stretching position, at the end of the range.
Then we do the physical exam to test different structures for their response to see if they tie with our initial diagnosis we thought of during the history portion. We’ll take X-rays if it is warranted, like to rule out pathology. If we see something concerning, we’ll refer them to their medical doctor to follow up.
What to Expect
The most important part of your care is finding the source of your pain, so we can treat it. Does the issue originate with a nerve, disc, joint, or muscle? Determining where the problem started allows us to create a plan to correct it and keep you pain-free.
In the low back, the problem is usually a disc issue or a facet joint problem. Both respond well to chiropractic care. When the problem is from a disc, we have to determine which position alleviates the pain and adjust in that direction.
If it’s a joint issue, adjustment allows us to open up the joint, which is the best treatment option. This allows synovial joint fluid to flow through the joint, getting more nutrients to the area, and hydrating the disc, so it can heal.
Adjustments are the best way to relax the muscle. Our chiropractors may also do some pin and stretch technique, where they hold the muscle while the patient moves through the painful motions.
